Before & After IV Sedation

What to expect before your appointment & during recovery

IV sedation is used to help patients feel deeply relaxed and comfortable during certain dental procedures. While you’ll remain responsive, most patients remember little to nothing about their treatment. Following these instructions before and after your appointment is essential for your safety and a smooth recovery.

01

Before Your IV Sedation Appointment

Preparation is essential

To ensure your safety during IV sedation, please follow these instructions carefully:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your appointment (including water)

  • Take only medications approved by your dentist or surgeon

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Avoid wearing makeup, nail polish, or jewellery

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to the appointment and drive you home

IV sedation cannot be administered without a confirmed escort.

02

Day of Your Appointment

  • Arrive on time to allow for preparation and monitoring

  • Your medical history and medications will be reviewed

  • Vital signs will be monitored throughout your procedure

  • You will remain relaxed, comfortable, and closely supervised

Our team is trained to ensure your safety at every step.

03

After IV Sedation

Recovery Expectations

After your procedure, it’s normal to experience:

  • Drowsiness or grogginess

  • Limited memory of the procedure

  • Mild dizziness or nausea

These effects usually wear off within several hours.

04

Important Aftercare Instructions

For the remainder of the day:

  • Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions

  • Rest at home with a responsible adult present

  • Avoid alcohol or sedative medications

  • Follow all post-operative instructions provided

Most patients feel back to normal by the following day.

05

Eating & Drinking After Sedation

  • Start with clear liquids

  • Gradually return to soft foods as tolerated

  • Avoid hot foods or drinks until numbness has fully worn off

Your care team will guide you based on your procedure.
