After Tooth Extractions

Supporting healing & comfort after your procedure

Recovering after a tooth extraction is an important part of your treatment. Following these care instructions helps promote proper healing, reduce discomfort, and lower the risk of complications. At Southwest Smiles, we’re here to support you through every stage of recovery — if you have questions at any time, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

01

Immediately After Your Extraction

First 24 Hours

  • Bite gently on gauze as instructed to control bleeding

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for the first 24 hours

  • Rest with your head elevated

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face in 15-minute intervals

  • Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed

Some oozing and mild swelling are normal during this time.

02

Managing Discomfort & Swelling

  • Mild to moderate soreness is expected and usually peaks within 24–48 hours

  • Swelling can be minimized with cold compresses during the first day

  • Switch to warm compresses after 24 hours if advised

  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 hours

If pain increases instead of improving, contact our office.

03

Eating & Drinking After Extraction

  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days (yogurt, soup, smoothies — no straws)

  • Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods until healing progresses

  • Stay well hydrated, but sip gently

  • Gradually return to normal foods as comfort allows

04

Oral Care & Healing

  • Do not brush directly over the extraction site for the first day

  • Resume gentle brushing elsewhere the same evening

  • After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water if recommended

  • Avoid smoking or vaping, as this can delay healing and cause dry socket

What to Watch For

Please contact Southwest Smiles if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain after a few days

  • Excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop

Prompt care helps prevent complications.
